Precarn provides an integrated suite of programs which fund research and assist in the development of highly qualified entrepreneurial people and commercialization of innovative technology which has commerical viability. The Precarn Model serves to emphasize the collaborative approach in all of these initiatives. Precarn has managed two major programs over since its inception in 1987: The CORE Precarn Intelligent Systems Program and the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS).
Available Funding Programs
Precarn has several funding programs which are offered on either a periodic or continuous basis. The programs that are currently active are listed here:
Industrial T-GAP (Closed)
The current competition is now closed. There were over 100 applications to the program. Those that were accepted have now been forwarded to Precarn’s review committee. Decisions are expected to be announced by the end of June.
Precarn has allocated up to $4 Million* in funds to advance technologies that show commercial promise. The Technology-Gap Assistance Program (T-GAP) is the conduit through which the funds are awarded.
The T-GAP program has the following characteristics:
- A focus on small (2-50 person) companies and start-up companies;
- Maximum funding is $100,000;
- Maximum Precarn support is 40% of total project costs;
- Project duration of nine months or less; and,
- 50% of Precarn’s contribution will be paid at midterm of the project and the remaining 50% will be paid upon project completion and receipt of the final report.

Small Company Funding Available (Closed)
Now Closed for Applications: There as been an overwhelming response!
"Due to an overwhelming response to our call and a limited amount of funding available, we are closing the program until such time as Precarn receives additional support. We have received over 40 applications to the program.
Specifically targeting projects with early commercialization potential, Precarn has allocated a $2.5 Million funding boost to promote the research and development (R&D) efforts of Canadian companies applying intelligent systems to solve commercial problems in the environment and manufacturing sectors.
The program has the following characteristics:
- A focus on SME companies;
- Maximum funding is $500,000
- Maximum Precarn support is 65% of total project costs;
- Project must be completed on or before December 31, 2009;

Precarn-Alberta R&D Funding Program (Closed)
Specifically targeting companies in Alberta. A joint program with Government of Alberta (Advanced Education and Trechnology) and Western Economic Diversification Canada.
