About Precarn
What does Precarn stand for? Is it an acronym for something?
At incorporation in 1987, the name Precarn was developed from a concatenation of Pre-Competitive Advanced Research Network. The brand "Precarn" is now synonymous with effective research management and commercially relevant results.
Is Precarn a federal agency?
No, Precarn is a not-for-profit corporation that is arms-length from the Federal Government.
What is the return on the Government investment in your programs?
Precarn and its programs have been subject to several formal evaluations. In all cases the results show that Precarn delivers substantially more value to all levels of government than other R&D support programs. One of the evaluations, conducted by BearingPoint can be viewed here.

What do you offer academic researchers?
Academic researchers are an important mandatory component of every Precarn sponsored project, and are eligible for funding for the work they (or their students) undertake in a project. Available funding is dependant on individual project awards and differs for each project. By participating in a Precarn project, academic researchers can see their students, their technologies and their people develop real world applications with commercial success.

I need some research undertaken. Can Precarn help me with that?
Precarn itself does not conduct research; however, we can put you in contact with a vast number of world class researchers that form part of the Precarn network, and Precarn offers formal referral and research management services. Precarn can help put your company in touch with academics, users and other companies. In additional, Precarn can help you find many other programs that might be suitable for your company.
I have a new prototype. Can Precarn help me bring it to market?
Precarn has a history of success in supporting researchers in the commercialization of their intellectual property. This has included early stage support to 41 start-up companies that have derived from Precarn research programming. Do I need to repay the support I get from Precarn?
No, you do not. At this time, all of Precarn’s support is in the form of non-repayable grants.
What funding do you offer private sector companies?
Private sector companies participating in a Precarn sponsored project are eligible for funding in the form of non-repayable grants. Amounts vary according to the specific program under which funding is awarded, and the specific amount awarded to an individual project that is approved, but generally falls in the range of 30 to 40% of eligible costs.

If I have a Precarn project, are my costs eligible for SR&ED credits?
Yes, all of your costs to the project are eligible for your company’s SR&ED tax credit application.
